MLB Preview: Boston Red Sox 2010

The Boston Red Sox’s franchise have been very busy this off-season making many power moves, including the addition of Mike Cameron, and the dismissal of pitcher Jason Bay. Bay’s deal was a long and drawn out session for both Bay and the Red Sox‘s GM Theo Epstein. Bay ultimately decided to join the N.Y. Mets franchise for a much sweeter deal, consisting of $66 million.

The franchise has also avoided many threatening arbitration issues by closing deals with players left in the wind. One way they avoided arbitration was with the deal made with closer John Papelbon. Final settlements included a one year deal at $9.35 million. Similar deals were made with two righty relievers: Manny Delcarmen and Ramon Ramirez.

The last player standing out was a prospect in Jeremy Hermida. A one year, $3.345 million dollar deal. The ex-Marlin was about the only player satisfied with the overall outcome of the deal, even as a fourth string-outfielder. The RedSox were simply happy with extending their record of avoiding arbitration for eight years.

Be as it may, it seems that Epstein has taken a very aggressive approach to finalizing these off-season deals. Will the same aggression, however, be transferred to the field come playing season? The roster of seasoned veterans and top prospects dictates this. Only the season will tell.
