Detroit Tigers Season Preview

Last year, the Detroit Tigers won 86 games but were disappointed after a late season collapse and ended up missing the playoffs for the third straight year after winning the American League pennant in 2006.

Management thought change was necessary, and the Detroit Tigers overhauled their roster. Gone are All-Stars Curtis Granderson, Placido Polanco and Edwin Jackson – both Granderson and Polanco are being replaced by rookies. Also gone are closer Fernando Rodney and power-hitting outfielder Marcus Thames.

But it’s not all bad in Detroit. They have several new guys taking their place. The big name is Johnny Damon, who was with the Yankees last year and was a sportbook favorite, but the Tigers also have to be excited about centerfielder Austin Jackson, who came to Detroit in the Granderson deal.

The Curtis Granderson trade was a blockbuster involving the Tigers, Yankees, and Arizona Diamondbacks. Besides Austin Jackson, the Tigers received pitchers Phil Coke from the Yankees and Max Scherzer. Coke is expected to be a key member of the bullpen, while Scherzer is expected to be the Tigers’ number 3 starter.

The bullpen took a hit when Fernando Rodney left for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and took the 37 saves he had last year with him. Fortunately for the Tigers, they were able to replace Rodney by signing free agent closer Jose Valverde, late of the Houston Astros.

Highly regarded rookie, Scott Sizemore, is the Tigers new second baseman replacing Placido Polanco.

The 2010 Detroit Tigers may have fewer recognizable names, but they will be younger and more athletic. Never miss out to bet on this team at your favorite sportsbook. This may not translate to more wins, but Detroit’s management believes the Tigers will be a better team this year.
